How Weather Affects Locks and Door Mechanisms

London’s weather changes throughout the year can have a serious impact on the way locks and doors perform. Many homeowners notice that their doors become difficult to close in winter or that locks feel stiff during colder or wetter months. These issues are common — and understanding why they happen can help you prevent damage before it becomes costly.

1. Cold and Moisture

During cold weather, metal parts inside the lock can contract slightly, making the key harder to turn. Moisture and condensation can also freeze inside the keyway or gearbox, especially on UPVC and composite doors. If you experience this, never force the key — instead, gently warm it and apply a small amount of graphite or silicone lubricant.

2. Heat and Expansion

In warmer months, both wooden and UPVC doors expand slightly. This can cause misalignment between the latch, hooks, and strike plates. You might find you have to lift the handle harder or push the door tighter to lock it. Left untreated, this constant pressure can damage the gearbox or warp the door over time.

3. Humidity and Rust

High humidity accelerates corrosion inside locks, especially if they’re older or not regularly maintained. Rust can cause internal parts to seize or the key to stick. Keeping your locks clean and lubricated can stop this from happening.

At AMZ Locksmith, we often attend callouts where a simple weather-related issue has caused a jammed or broken lock. Our advice: check door alignment twice a year, especially before winter, and keep all moving parts clean and lightly lubricated.
